“I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately, I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, To put to rout all that was not life and not when I had come to die Discover that I had not lived.”

- Henry David Thoreau, 1817-1862

Appraising the element of 'heaven' (Climate)

Owing to the supreme importance and consequences of war, Sun Tzu advocated the need to appraise five fundamental factors:
1) Moral influence,
2) Climate,
3) Terrain,
4) Generalship
5) doctrine.

In this post, we will discuss on Climate. In ancient days, climate (or translated as 'heaven' in original script) refers to varying weather, seasons, temperatures, time etc. The climatic conditions therefore represent what nowadays known as force majoure, ie. uncontrollable aspect or act of god.

An interesting link to this is the no of stories about animal omens which happen during the 2004 December Tsunami disaster which killed 250,000 people world wide. During the disaster, animals were seen running to higher grounds hours before the waves strucked. Volunteer collecting bodies in the aftermath swore that after colllecting dozens of human corpses, not a single animal corpse was found. Research suggested that usage of animal omen to warn of disaster have span over thousands of years in China and Japan.

In our complex world right now, with all the telecommunication and radars, yet humans have became less sensitive to their surroundings than people in the ancient days. We read of wars and scandals across continents but yet people are unaware of the business cycles such as recessions or stagnations or changes in market structure in their own industries. For example, there was a company that have incurred massive debts due to misappropriation of funds by shareholder. Literary, shareholder were draining out whatever last resources out of existing projects that they can from this private limited company, transferring liquid assets into another firm. However, managers and executives in the companies seem oblivious to this happenings. They gossips about how competitors made blunders, lost jobs and who's who but failed to observed that their own company is being drained dry.

Sometimes in the modern day where everything is automated and daily lifes are filled with busy schedules, one seldom pause to observe about their surrounding climate. Try observing some simple phenomenal around you and you will see certain 'patterns' in the 'climate'.
